Connect Bing Webmaster Tools

Last updated:

The Bing Webmaster Tools connection brings the search side of organic traffic from Bing into KO: which queries Bing showed the website’s pages for, at what position, and how many impressions never became a click. The metrics are the same as for Google Search Console, so Google and Bing sit side by side in one report.

One connection carries one website from Bing Webmaster Tools. A second website means a second connection.

Set up the connection in KO

  1. In Connects, click Add connect….
  2. In the Statistics and Analytics category, choose Bing Webmaster Tools and click Connect.
  3. In 1. Connection, click Connect and sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools with the account — Microsoft, Google or Facebook — where the website is added. KO asks for read-only access.
  4. In 2. Site, choose the website in the Site field.

Set up Bing Webmaster Tools

Nothing needs to be switched on in Bing Webmaster Tools itself. One thing matters: the website is added to the account you signed in with, and ownership is verified. Websites without verified ownership do not appear in the Site list: Bing does not return data for them.

If the website is already verified in Google Search Console, you can add it to Bing Webmaster Tools by importing it from there, without verifying ownership again.

Read search in a report

Search console metrics are grouped under Search:

  • Search impressions — how many times the website’s pages appeared in search results;
  • Search clicks — clicks from the results to the website;
  • Search CTR — clicks divided by impressions;
  • Average position — position in the results, weighted by impressions. Lower is better.

To see Bing separately from Google, add a Breakdown section by the Source field: Bing rows have the source bing, Google rows have google. For the next level, choose Search query or Page path.

Bing returns data by week, not by day. A week from Friday to Thursday is recorded as one number on its Thursday, so read Bing by weeks or months: by days it has one value a week. Bing has no country or device type, so in those breakdowns its rows fall into “not set”.

The first update loads all the history Bing returns. After that the connection updates once a day and re-reads the last four weeks each time: Bing revises recent weeks after the fact.

Turn the connection on

Switch the connection status to Active. Active becomes available once a website is chosen.

  • Active — everything works.
  • Setting up — everything works, but data updates are paused.
  • Archived — the connection is off; data and statistics are kept.
  • Delete — removes the connection’s data and statistics.

Data updates only run in Active, so a connection left in Setting up stays silently empty.

Check that data is coming in

  • Connection status shows a successful connection, with no error note.
  • The Site list contains your website. An empty list with the note “This account has no verified sites in Bing Webmaster Tools.” means you signed in with another account or the website is not verified in it: go back to Set up Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • After the next update, a Breakdown section by Source shows a bing row, and by weeks — Bing impressions for recent weeks.
  • In Diagnostics, on the Connections panel, the connection shows “Data is syncing”. “No site selected” there means nothing is selected in Site and no data is loaded; any other text names the reason loading stopped.

If it doesn’t add up

Fewer impressions than in Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing returns its weekly page and query reports without the smallest rows, while the Bing Webmaster Tools interface shows the website’s total. It is a difference in what Bing gives out, not a loading error.

A page has a row with no search query. These are the page’s impressions and clicks that Bing did not split by query. They stay in the page total, so the week’s sum matches Bing.

The daily chart looks like a saw. It is weekly data: the whole week sits on Thursday. Switch the period to weeks or months.

The connection stopped updating. Connection status says “The connection stopped working. Connect the account again.”: Bing no longer lets KO read the data, for example access was revoked in Bing Webmaster Tools. Click Connect and sign in again with the same account.

Website mentions in Copilot answers are not in KO reports: Bing shows them only in its own interface and does not return them through its API.
